How to Use Google Photos (Step-by-Step Beginner Guide)

Step 1: Install Google Photos

  • Open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android).
  • Search for Google Photos.
  • Install the app.
  • Open it after installation.

Step 2: Sign in to Your Google Account

  • Tap Sign in.
  • Enter your Gmail address.
  • Enter your password.
  • Tap Next.

If you don’t have a Gmail account, create one first.

Step 3: Allow Permissions

When Google Photos asks for permission:

  • Tap Allow Access to All Photos.
  • Allow notifications if you want backup alerts.

This lets Google Photos see your photos and videos.

Step 4: Turn On Backup

  1. Tap your profile picture (top-right).
  2. Tap Photos settings.
  3. Tap Backup.
  4. Turn Backup ON.

Now your photos will automatically upload to your Google account.

Step 5: Choose Backup Quality

You’ll see two options:

  • Storage saver – Uses less storage (recommended for most people).
  • Original quality – Keeps full quality but uses more storage.

Choose the one you prefer.

Step 6: Wait for Backup

To check backup:

  • Open Google Photos.

  • You’ll see messages like:
    • Backing up…
    • Backup complete

Keep your phone connected to Wi-Fi if you have many photos.

Step 7: Find Your Photos

All backed-up photos appear in the Photos tab.

You can:

  • Scroll to older photos.
  • Search by date.
  • Search for people, places, or objects (for example, “cat”, “beach”, or “car”).

Step 8: View Photos on Another Device

Open a browser and sign in to your Google account at photos.google.com to see your backed-up photos from any computer or phone.

Step 9: Free Up Space on Your Phone

After backup:

  1. Tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Free up space.
  3. Google Photos will remove copies that are already backed up while keeping them safely in your Google Photos library.
